Characteristics of wood
Sapele — tropical wood, an affordable alternative to mahogany, which has similarities in appearance, handling, and workability. Trees grow in West Africa.
The wood has different hues — from golden to dark red-brown — and darkens with age without treatment with oils that prevent oxidation. The grains are interlocked, which causes some problems when working with lumber. However, they are the ones who create a bright and unique pattern of Sapele. The texture is smooth and very dense.
This is a moderately durable species but will last a long time when protecting from insects and moisture. When processing, Sapele is excellently polished, accepts finishing materials, nails, fasteners, glues well. These properties make wood versatile and applicable in many areas.
